Consulting & Portfolio Reviews
For most of us taking a photo comes naturally and we do it for fun without ever thinking of the monetary value and power of each image we create. It really doesn’t matter how long it took you, a few seconds or days, to create an image that now clients are calling you for. Always think of this, An Image Used is An Image Pay For.
From the start of my career, I had been a strong advocate of protecting our © as well as knowing the value of my work the moment I had taken a photo that is protected by copyright law in the USA and many other nations. So for full protection of your work and to be compensated in case any of your images is abused.
PLEASE © your work right away. Sadly most commercial photographers are clueless about the licensing or usage and the true value of their images. Is easy to get caught up in the moment of a phone call or the excitement of getting an email from a client who wants to use one of your work yet without much thought we write a quick reply agreeing to their offers and contracts of an already bad deal.
I want to make sure that you are able to get as much as you can from any of your stock images or any upcoming photo shoot. So don’t get paid for your time but instead for the value of your work or for the great image you can create for a client with your talent.
None of my magazines or corporate clients call me saying, “We have a photo shoot and it will ONLY take two hours so we can only pay you this for 3 hours or a day.” If you need help with a proposal, quote, or contract my production company will write for you a win/win bid so there is no money left on the table.
In this business, after your talent, the art of Negotiating is EVERYTHING! Many of my images have been licensed for prices ranging from $350-$20,000 Tips for Licensing and usage of your images: 1. Length of time the image will be used for. 2.2. How is the image going to be used, e.g. magazine, web, book, PDF, billboard, TV, newspaper? As you can see is endless.
On my portrait page, these are examples of two of my works which were licensed for three and two years. 1. The Gary Player was licensed for brochures, web, and PDF for a period of 3 years and my fee was $20,000
2. The man holding the kayak image was licensed to a Danish advertising agency for two years to be used in several European countries and its usage was for brochures, PDFs, and web and my fee was $10,0000 You may say “Gosh that’s plenty of money” and you are right but the key is to know how to deal with a client and to provide the right contract where all is clearly stated and there isn’t any grey area so years from now it will protect you and your client and keep the relationship a long-lasting.
And to seal the deal, before you send any stock images out or before you click the shutter while doing your next big project, the contract alone is not OK. So make sure there is a signature of the person who asked you for the licensing of your image or hired you for the job. But make sure that that person does have the authority to sign your contract.
To any photographer I will say that with time good negotiating skills will come to you to be used accordingly, since all deals and requests are different, and in the process, mistakes will be made which will make you a wiser business person and an all-around photographer.
We all know that talent is important but you must have a strong website, powerful social media presence, or print portfolio to showcase all of that. But putting it together, refining, and marketing your style to the proper clients can be very tricky and with the guidance of a pro eye it can open doors much faster.
In our studio, we will put you in direct connection with a selection of present and former magazine/Commercial photo editors from Time, Newsweek, People, and Sports Illustrated who will look at a selection of what best represents your work and edit them and will help you and guide you in putting together a much visual powerful website or print book emphasizing the strength of your talent.
There will be a couple of revisions presented to you as well then a direct phone call with the photo editor to finalize it. So if you know which direction you may want to go but don’t know the best way to get there our photo editor will help you and give you ideas for making that possible.
